Ray Tracing Point Set Surfaces

چکیده
Point set surfaces (PSS) are a smooth manifold surface approximation from a set of sample points. The surface definition is based on a projection operation that constructs local polynomial approximations and respects a minimum feature size. We present techniques for ray tracing PSSs. For the computation of ray-surface intersection the properties of the projection operation are exploited: The surface is enclosed by a union of minimum feature size spheres. A ray is intersected with the spheres first and inside the spheres with local polynomial approximations. Our results show that 2–3 projections are sufficient to accurately intersect a ray with the surface.

Improving the Interval Ray Tracing of Implicit Surfaces
This paper presents a fast and reliable method to trim non-solution regions in an interval ray tracing process. The “trimming algorithm” uses interval analysis to perform rejection tests in a set of pixels simultaneously, instead of individual pixels at each time. With this approach, the presented algorithm runs faster than the traditional interval ray tracing algorithm. Also, an interval algor...

Point-based models are gaining lately considerable attention as an alternative to traditional surface meshes. In this context, Point Set Surfaces (PSS) were proposed as a modeling and rendering method with important topological and approximation properties. However, ray-tracing PSS is computationally expensive. Therefore, we propose an interactive ray-tracing algorithm for PSS implemented compl...

With the increasing capabilities of 3D data scanning devices, point set surfaces are becoming increasingly popular. Even though using points sets already lessens storage requirements (connectivity information is not stored), the ever increasing amount of acquired geometric information gives rise to an equally growing demand for data that needs a compact representation to be stored, transmitted,...
متن کاملPerturbation Methods for Interactive Specular Reflections
We describe a new approach for interactively approximating specular reflections in arbitrary curved surfaces. The technique is applicable to any smooth implicitlydefined reflecting surface that is equipped with a ray intersection procedure; it is also extremely efficient as it employs local perturbations to interpolate point samples analytically. After ray tracing a sparse set of reflection pat...
متن کاملUsing Temporary Explicit Meshes for Direct Flux Calculation on Implicit Surfaces
We focus on a surface evolution problem where the surface is represented as a narrow-band level-set and the local surface speed is defined by a relation to the direct visibility of a source plane above the surface. A level-set representation of the surface can handle complex evolutions robustly and is therefore a frequently encountered choice. Ray tracing is used to compute the visibility of th...
